Woodbury County Organizes an EMS Task Force to Deal with Issues of Continuing Coverage for our Communities Comments from Meeting summaries, Media coverage, and Task Force Notes This past summer saw one area EMS Service turn to it's community leaders for help in continuing to provide ambulance service for their community. A meeting was held in Anthon, where a small group of people who cover all calls announce their retirement on Dec 31st. This action was going to close the doors on the service for good. People are needed, but not available, or unable to carry on the tradition of an outstanding ambulance service. Because this would soon ripple into other area communities, many area EMS services jumped on board to help in any way possible. Splitting the area to surrounding communities would soon be too much of a burden and take them down also. With an unbelievable amount of EMS Bureau regulations and requirements passed down to volunteer services, burnout is increasing. Changes must be made or every community will suffer the same loss of EMS service. Daytime, in town people are the issue, and this is not going to change. 15 years ago, Moville had 9 EMT's on main Street, and now has 1. Even though we have 23 squad members with 20 different EMT's responding during the first 6 months of 2009, weekdays can still find us with 1 or 0 available to respond. KCAU, KMEG, the Sioux City Journal, and the Moville record recognize the seriousness of this and have been working to get the word out. County / Rural Community government's involvement is critical to our survival. Monthly meetings are being held, State legislators are being contacted, and an attempt to gain public support has begun. All options are being entertained by the group. An estimate by EOC - Climbing Hill, to provide professional ambulance support would be around $350,000 to start. The issues of coverage, personnel, and regulations can be dealt with by teamwork and mutual support. This is the goal of the Task Force. Please continue to support your local service in it's effort to protect your community.

Our Community - Health Care Moville Area Medical Clinic ( upper level ) Thomas Wente D.O. / Diane Drevs P.A. The lower level is occupied by C N O S Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation services. Dr Wente has purchased the facility from the Moville Medical Board of Directors. Built by donations from the community, the clinic has served the area for over 15 years. The money from the sale will be in a fund designated for future assistance in securing health care for the community when it becomes necessary. In the meantime, this fund will continue to offer scholarships to deserving graduates from Woodbury Central and Lawton Bronson High Schools. This also shows a secure commitment by Dr Wente to continue serving the area.

A learning day for WC high school students. Mock Vehicle Accident and Follow up A Mock Car accident was set up in front of the grandstand. The accident occurred when 3 students were in a car hit by an intoxicated driver. One victim was dead on scene, one unconscious and transported by M A C, one seriously injured transported by Lawton ambulance, and one transported by Moville ambulance. Parents of the involved students were involved in followup scenerios held in the school theatre. Involved in the drill was Moville Fire Ambulance, Lawton Fire Ambulance, Mercy Air Care, Jon Erdmann with McCulloch Funeral Home, Pat Phipps with Metcalf Thompson Phipps Attorneys, Doug Boettger with Woodbury County Sheriff Dept., Jeremy Probasco with Iowa State Patrol, Dr Jeffrey O'Tool with St Lukes ER, Wes Von Donge with Moville Police Dept. and family members of the victims, Pat and Sandy Rogers, Rob and Amy White, Susie & Lee McElrath. Thank You to all the involved agencies, and especially to South Sioux Towing for furnishing, delivering, and pickup up the wrecked vehicles as well as Dave Amick and the Woodbury County Fairgrounds for allowing us to use the facility, and LaDonna Crilly - Western Iowa Tech for her moulage skills and assistance. The fairgrounds scene was the accident that included emergency response, identification of the deceased by family and removal by funeral service. The school scenes included: the intoxicated driver arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, and then meeting with his attorney (Pat Phipps) who explained the seriousness of the situation The families of the injured kids meeting with Dr O'Tool, who explained the seriousness of the injuries and possible prognosis the family of the deceased student meeting with Jon Erdmann to begin making funeral arrangements This drill was intended to make students aware that there is so much more involved than just the accident itself, that families are affected forever by such an incident, and hopefully, generate some thoughts about their own safety and immortality. Moville Record account of Community Wide - 2 day disaster drill A special "Thank You" to all the surrounding communities for responding to the Disaster Drill. It was a real learning experience for everyone involved. 9 EMS calls came to Com Center from all different areas of Moville within a 7 minute time frame and the initial plan was put into action. We found that it is much easier to talk and write about how to handle such a situation than it is to actually do it. Much went very well, and improvement in some areas is needed. Ambulances, EMS, Fire responded from Lawton, Kingsley, Pierson, Bronson and Anthon responded. Mercy Air Care also flew to the scene. Other agencies involved included Woodbury County Emergency Services and Woodbury County Sheriff Dept. After the drill was completed for the initial response, everyone came together to debrief, review, and evaluate what had taken place. Suggestions were made and changes in the initial response plan will be made accordingly. Final coverage
